The Heroine of Big Waves
Bliders, get ready to ride a wave of resilience and courage! We’re bringing you the incredible story of Maya Gabeira, the Brazilian surf icon who has pushed every limit!
Roots and Burning Passion
Born in the heart of Rio de Janeiro to a family steeped in culture and art, Maya Gabeira found her passion for surfing at just 15 years old. Amazingly, within just two years, she had already joined the professional circuit. Maya is a true “big wave hunter,” taking on some of the world’s most untamed waves, from Waimea to Teahupo’o, and even the icy waters of Alaska.
The Perfect Storm
2013 was a year Maya will never forget. While trying to conquer Big Mama, a monstrous wave at Nazaré, she was wiped out and nearly lost at sea. Thanks to a heroic and timely rescue, she survived. But the road to full recovery was long and tough, both physically and mentally.
Comeback and Record-Breaking Achievement
But Maya didn’t let that stop her. After two years of intense rehabilitation and inner battles, she returned to the giant waves of Nazaré, conquering her fears. And in 2020, she set a new Guinness World Record by surfing a massive 22.5-meter wave!
Maya Gabeira is living proof that with determination, courage, and a touch of boldness, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve the unimaginable. As Maya says, “Waves don’t wait, and neither do opportunities in life. Ride them!”
